The history of the phrase "begging the question"

A casual overview from a philological perspective can be found here.  The suggestion to replace the correct, logical usage with "assuming the conclusion," however, is an infelicitous one, since the concept covers more than just circular or tautological arguments: it includes any reasoning where the claim to be proved and that by which it is proved are equally uncertain (Prior Analytics 65a27-30).
