Philosophers in a despairing mood

Here are two persuasive definitions (see the Pocket Guide to Critical Thinking, p. 7) from two eminent nineteenth-century Oxonians:

"Logic is neither an art nor a science, but a dodge." (Benjamin Jowett)

"Metaphysics is the finding of bad reasons for what we already believe on instinct." (F.H. Bradley)

 Quotes like these are useful to recall the next time a philosopher tells you philosophy leads to tranquility.
